A “Natural” Caesarean Section – should they all be like this?

A “Natural” Caesarean Section? By Roger Marwood MSc FRCOG A “natural” Caesarean Section? “No such thing”, I hear you saying.  And , of course you are right as a Caesarean can never be fully natural.  But there are ways that the process can be made to feel less like a major operation in an unnatural and clinical environment and more like an exceptionally moving, astonishing and , dare I say it, enjoyable and unique family event. For the last few years of my clinical practice , I was lucky enough to be able to achieve, wherever possible, a very satisfying […]

The Pregnancy Survival Guide

1. You will not always attain the fabled “Pregnancy Glow”. Despite allusions to the contrary, many women do not feel their best during pregnancy and that special warm feeling, as life grows inside you, may sadly evade you for the full 40 weeks. There are a multitude of little afflictions that can plague the average pregnant woman. During the first trimester you may feel very tired, sick, emotional, fat, spotty, with sore boobs and odd twinges that fill you with fear. The second trimester, which is often hailed as the best phase of pregnancy, may bring constipation, piles, more emotion, nausea, […]

Will Herpes affect my unborn baby?

I am 15 weeks pregnant and have tested positive for Herpes.  My doctor in China suggests that the fetus may be also infected by the HSV virus, which may result in deformity of the fetus, they have suggested that I abort the child, however, i’m 27-years old and this is my first child, I really want to deliver her/him to this new world. The only experience I have about HSV is that I used to have herpes on my face last year, just at the corner of the eyes, the symptom lasts about 1-2weeks, and it’s only on my face, I […]

How To Get Pregnant

Millions do it every month.  Almost half of all pregnancies are not even planned. Should be easy, shouldn’t it ? All you do is have sex and , err, that’s it.  It happens!? The reality , however, is somewhat different. On average , from starting to actually plan a baby, to conception, takes about six months.  So for some , it takes only two and a half minutes, and for others it may take several years.  Even under optimum circumstances, with a fertile woman and a fertile man, having regular intercourse, there is only approximately, a one in three […]

Should the Father be at the birth of his baby?

In the last 40 years there has been a dramatic change in the behaviour and role of fathers in the delivery room . Figures suggest that, in UK, the presence of the responsible male at the critical moment has increased from 10% to 90% . Most of us would think that, in balance, that this was a healthy and welcome advance. But it doesn’t work for everyone.     There are so many potential benefits, for both mother and father.  For the mother, it can mean the reassuring presence of her lover, best friend, confidante and most importantly, the man […]

Confessions! A New Blog Post

CONFESSIONS Author: Rebecca Maberly Tuesday, March 4th, 2014 Motherhood isn’t a breeze by any stretch of the imagination. So, why do we pretend we’ve got it perfected when anyone worth impressing is within earshot? We all have off moments. In fact, most us have a few off moments a day. Many mothers struggle with parenting demons – in fact dark thoughts and bad habits are more common than you think. We all have these feelings! Let’s absolve ourselves of our ‘sins’ by ‘fessing up and coming clean about the ‘bad’ things we mothers think and do! I’ll go first. I […]

Stop Bickering about Breastfeeding!

Stop Bickering about Breastfeeding! Before I set up this website, I had absolutely no idea how contentious the subject of breastfeeding was.  I had breastfed my son, very painfully and therefore begrudgingly, for 16 weeks and hated every minute.  (Read my story here)  My sister also had a pretty dismal experience but soldiered on a little longer than me.  Friends’ experiences ranged from exclusively breastfeeding happily for a year to mixed feeding from a few weeks and I had not known anyone who had chosen to bottle feed from birth. Within hours of launching our website, I received multiple “troll” […]

5 weeks pregnant with period-type pains!

I am 5 weeks pregnant and I have period type pains, a dull ache in both ovaries. Is this normal? Congratulations on your news! Everything does feel a bit different in the early stages. So the symptoms you describe are very common. In the absence of bleeding or severe pain, you should have nothing to worry about. If in doubt then try and arrange a scan sometime after 6 weeks, to date the pregnancy and check all is well.

Got Help? A New Blog Post

GOT HELP? Author: Rebecca Maberly Monday, September 23rd, 2013 How much help you get from your baby father will depend on a number of factors: The kind of guy he is…good guy/bad guy? The amount of sleep he needs…flying on 5 hours or sluggish even on 8? The kind of job he has…brain surgeon? Out of work actor? How his own mother has helped to shape his beliefs…modern man or  Stepford Husband? And most significantly and importantly, how assertive you are! In a nutshell, if you are a bossy bitch, shacked up with a compassionate, freelance / unemployed artiste, insomniac […]
