Current NICE guidelines recommend Vitamin D supplements for all breastfeeding mothers and infants and children up to the age of 5 years. If you stick with the recommended dosage it will be quite safe for your baby. Providing you […]

Can Breastfeeding Help Prevent Post Natal Depression?

Have you heard the news that successful breastfeeding can help to prevent Post Natal Depression? But didn’t we know that already? Well not exactly. There was always the theory,  that , women who were able to breast feed , were in some way different from those women who did not breast feed their babies. In other words, the breast feeders may themselves be less likely to get depression, or better supported or in some way helped by the hormonal changes associated with lactation. No study had ever really looked at the relationship between breastfeeding and postnatal depression and also taken […]

Stop Bickering about Breastfeeding!

Stop Bickering about Breastfeeding! Before I set up this website, I had absolutely no idea how contentious the subject of breastfeeding was.  I had breastfed my son, very painfully and therefore begrudgingly, for 16 weeks and hated every minute.  (Read my story here)  My sister also had a pretty dismal experience but soldiered on a little longer than me.  Friends’ experiences ranged from exclusively breastfeeding happily for a year to mixed feeding from a few weeks and I had not known anyone who had chosen to bottle feed from birth. Within hours of launching our website, I received multiple “troll” […]

My wife is breastfeeding, how can I help?

“I am breastfeeding our new-born – how can my partner help?” By Louisa van den Bergh of Lulubaby When taking the breastfeeding session of our antenatal course, I often ask the mums to be what they think the fathers can do to help once their baby has been born. So often new fathers report to me that they feel “useless” and a bit “spare” whilst their partner is busy feeding the baby(quite a regular occurrence when they are tiny) so I thought it might be helpful to highlight a few things which your other half can be doing to […]

Is it safe to take medication for Piles whilst breastfeeding?

Following a c section last October, I developed mastitis, then a breast abscess and was on antibiotics for 4 weeks. While fine immediately after birth (for around 2 months) my digestive system became a mess/constipated and I have developed internal anal piles. Although apparently mild, they are inflamed and I find them very uncomfortable so my GP has given me lactulose, hydrocortisone ointment and suppositories – are these safe to take while still breastfeeding? And are the piles likely to remain (can you ever get rid of them completely?) and get worse in a subsequent pregnancy? Oh the joys of […]

The Case Against Breastfeeding – by Hanna Rosin

This is a controversial but nonetheless very interesting article presenting the case against breastfeeding. It has been reproduced with the kind permission of Hanna Rosin. For more information on the author, please see her website.  http://hannarosin.com/ ONE AFTERNOON AT the playground last summer, shortly after the birth of my third child, I made the mistake of idly musing about breast-feeding to a group of new mothers I’d just met. This time around, I said, I was considering cutting it off after a month or so. At this remark, the air of insta-friendship we had established cooled into an icy politeness, and […]
