My recent 36 week scan diagnosed polyhydramnios (95th centile) and I am now very worried about cord prolapse and bleeding. What are risks of this and should I go in to hospital for an assessment as soon as my waters break or should I wait for regular strong contractions as generally advised? Excess amniotic fluid (polyhydramnios) can be associated with large babies, gestational diabetes, twins, and occasionally abnormalities in the baby or placenta. Sometimes it is just a temporary problem and often no cause is found. If it persists, there is an increased risk of early labour and sometimes early […]
I had my baby 7 weeks ago and have noticed a prolapse (possibly bladder & bowel) which protrudes slightly at times. I have an appointment with my ob/gyn but would like your opinion on whether there is likely to be some improvement with time & when I stop breastfeeding. Or am I looking at surgery? It is far too soon to predict You can expect a considerable improvement with the passage of time , regaining your normal pre pregnancy weight , pelvic floor exercises and further improvement when your hormones return to normal after stopping breast feeding . So often […]
I have just begun weaning my baby at six months and have been advised to start giving her vitamin drops. I currently take vitamins myself, specifically for breastfeeding. Should I continue to take these or will that be too many vitamins for my baby?! Hope you can help as I’m so confused after asking several different people and reading various forums!! Current NICE guidelines recommend Vitamin D supplements for all breastfeeding mothers and infants and children up to the age of 5 years. If you stick with the recommended dosage it will be quite safe for your baby. Providing you […]
I had some spotting around 6 weeks and had an early scan which revealed the embryo was fine and had a heartbeat. I a, now 8.5 weeks and for the last two days have had red blood on and off and slight cramps. The nurse in the gynae ward at the hospital said it wasn’t enough to warrant an examination but I can’t help worrying. Can red blood be ok and not a sign of miscarriage? Sorry to hear this- it can be such a worrying time. Here are some links to some information about bleeding and some questions that […]
I have just been recommended to take evening primrose oil capsules from 34 weeks to help with skin stretching and labour. Is it safe to take? It appears to be safe in late pregnancy, but not without side effects and an unpleasant taste Nausea, bloating and digestive problems are common. I feel it is my duty to tell you that there is insufficient evidence that it has any beneficial effect on labour, timing of delivery, preeclampsia, or baby size, and is generally not recommended. I can’t find any evidence about skin stretching. Hope this is helpful.
I am 19 weeks pregnant (first time) so unsure, with few things. My question is, whether it is safe to do highlights during my next visit at the hairdresser? There are various opitions about colouring your hair during pregnancy where one should not do any chemical treatments on your head and others saying that if it’s just highlights, it is fine as the colour won’t touch the scalp. Could you please help me here? I am really confused..My priority is the good of the baby but I still want to look like a human while I go through this exciting […]
Hi, if you are planning on starting a family, should you start taking folic acid before for a few weeks or during the period you start trying to conceive? Is it also good to avoid alcohol when trying to conceive? Also, if you’ve been on the pill a number of years, should you come off for a few months before starting trying to conceive or is it fine once you finish a pack to stop and start trying to conceive? Please do have a look at our article “How to Get Pregnant” – this should answer all your questions!
Basically, I’m anaphylactic – cause unknown – and have had two attacks in my life and carry an Epi-pen. The first was when I was 10 and it was a very hot day and I was running various races at school and went in to anaphylactic shock. They thought it was an asthma attack at first but then I was rushed to the hospital and the doctor on call immediately recognised it. Apparently my skin had gone all blue and blotchy and my system was shutting down. The second one I was abroad dancing aged 19, again very hot and […]
